5 Cashback Strategies That Actually Move the Needle
Prashant•
Most cashback programs leak value through poor category selection. Here's how to fix that.
Cashback programs look simple on the surface, but the gap between an average user and an optimized one can be 3–4x. Here are five strategies we recommend to clients.
1. Match cards to your actual spend mix
Pull a 90-day expense report and group spend by merchant category. Pick the card whose top earning categories overlap with your top three categories.
2. Stack a flat-rate card for everything else
A 2% flat-rate card catches the long tail of purchases that don't fit any bonus category.
3. Pay statement balances early
Some cards reduce rewards if utilization stays high. Paying mid-cycle keeps utilization low without sacrificing earnings.
4. Watch for rotating bonus quarters
Set a calendar reminder when quarterly categories change — most cardholders forget to enroll.
5. Reconcile rewards monthly
Treat cashback as revenue. If it isn't reconciled, it isn't real.
